Fundamentals

What Is a Hydraulic Crimper?

A hydraulic crimper uses pressurized fluid to permanently attach fittings to hydraulic hoses. The machine drives segmented dies inward, compressing a metal ferrule around the hose and fitting until they form a single, leak-proof assembly.

The process follows Pascal’s Law: a small input force on a hand pump or electric motor gets multiplied by the cylinder area ratio, producing 95 to 1,750 tons of crimping force. The entire cycle takes 6 to 30 seconds, depending on machine type and hose size.

Process

Complete Hose Assembly Workflow

One supplier, four steps. TRC builds the machines for every stage.

01

Cut

Measure and cut hose to length with a clean, square edge.

C300 / C300D / C520A →
02

Skive

Remove rubber cover from 4SP+ hoses so the ferrule contacts the wire braid.

S50 / SH50 →
03

Crimp

Insert fitting, position ferrule, and compress with the machine.

P32A / P32D / P20HP →
04

Test

Pressure-test the finished assembly to verify the crimp seal.

What Hydraulic Professionals Say

“I took home the old hydraulic crimper my work was scrapping. That thing is bulletproof — still works perfectly after 15 years of daily use. These machines outlast the people who run them.”
“We bought a Chinese crimper for the shop. After calibration and the right dies, it produces identical crimps to the Parker unit that costs 4× more. Pay for the machine, not the name.”
“Started crimping my own hoses. Saves 60-70% compared to buying pre-made assemblies. The hydraulic crimper paid for itself in under 3 months. Wish I’d done it sooner.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hydraulic crimper?
A hydraulic crimper is a machine that uses pressurized hydraulic fluid to compress a metal ferrule around a hydraulic hose and fitting, creating a permanent, leak-proof connection rated for high-pressure service.
How do I know which hydraulic crimper to buy?
Match tonnage to your largest hose: 1″ needs 95T, 1½″ needs 137T, 2″ needs 200T, 4″ needs 1,200T. Then decide where you crimp (workshop = electric, field = manual/battery) and how many per day (50+ = CNC).
Can one hydraulic crimper handle all hose sizes?
Within its tonnage range, yes — by swapping die sets. Each hose/fitting combination uses a specific die. TRC offers 150+ die sets. Most workshop crimpers include 10–14 standard sets.
What is the difference between a hydraulic crimper and a hydraulic press?
A hydraulic crimper uses segmented dies that compress radially around a cylindrical workpiece (hose ferrule). A hydraulic press pushes flat platens together. Same hydraulic principle, different tooling and motion.
Do I need CNC on my hydraulic crimper?
Only for 50+ crimps/day across multiple hose sizes, or when ISO traceability requires data logging. For single-size or low-volume work, a semi-auto electric model gives the same crimp quality at lower cost.
How long do crimping dies last?
TRC dies are hardened to HRC 50+ and last 5,000–10,000 cycles. Replace when you see scoring, rounded edges, or crimp diameters drifting out of 0.04 mm tolerance.
